a few images for you to see. President Yoweri Museveni has attributed the current shortages of electricity and sugar to numerous controversies caused by the political class and the media as well as relying on external funding.
The President made the remarks yesterday while presiding over the 49th Independence day anniversary celebrations held at the Golf Course in Lira district that run under the theme: “On the Threshold of the Golden Jubilee of Uganda’s Independence: Successes and Challenges”.The colorful ceremony was graced by visiting delegations of Kenya led by the country’s’ Vice President, Mr. Steven Kalonzo Musyoka and that of South Sudan, led by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. JamesWani Yiga. President Museveni, who congratulated Ugandans upon reaching this time, noted that the country’s economy would have been better but controversies by the political class and the media caused the delays of the implementation of some crucial development projects like the Bujagali hydro power station and the expansion of sugar production resulting in shortages. He explained that the construction of Bujagali Power Dam was delayed by a period of 10 years and the expansion of sugar production also delayed compelling government to import 40 tons at a cost of US$40 million. Mr. Museveni further pointed out that the paralysis of the crucial projects had also led to the depreciation of the Uganda shilling against the US dollar that in turn caused high inflation that stands at 28% as of last month of September. The President also explained that the general global high prices is caused by the transformation of the people in the developing countries like China and India, among others, adding that the trend had created a lot of demand of all commodities. He, however, gave assurances that the situation was not bad for Africa as the continent was now producing the globally needed commodities. He, therefore, advised the people of Uganda to double their efforts in agricultural production in order to reap profits from the current high food and commodity prices. Commenting on the peace situation in Uganda, President Museveni assured the nation that peace today prevails in the whole country and no one will ever disturb that tranquility again. During the day’s celebrations, President Museveni saluted the former leader, Dr. Milton Obote and all Ugandans, for their contribution to the struggle to enable Uganda attain independence. A one minute silence was observed in memory of all the former Presidents of Uganda who had since passed on. The President prayed for their souls to rest in eternal peace. Ealier, President Museveni awarded Independence Medals of different categories to Ugandans living and those departed for their sacrifice in making Uganda attain her independence. The wife of the President, Mrs. Janet Museveni, received two categories of medals that of Kagera, in recognition of her struggle against dictatorship and also that of Nalubaale for her contribution to the political development in Uganda through armed struggle.
The President also commissioned the Uniform for Patriotism Clubs and a Video Album of the National Patriotism Teachers’ Choir, led by Ms. Agnes Ageno. While commissioning the Uniform for Patriotic Clubs, President Museveni assured the nation that the government is not militarizing society. He clarified it is for discipline, hard-work and, if necessary, for the defence of our country. While greeting the gathering and the nation at large the visiting Vice-President of Kenya, Mr. Steven Kalonzo Musyoka, extended warm salutations from the people of Kenya to their brothers and sisters in Uganda. He also congratulated Ugandans on the occasion of independence saying it was not for Ugandans alone but for all East Africans. The Kenyan Vice President congratulated President Museveni for winning the recent elections and the President’s commitment to the East African integration. The leaders of the South Sudanese delegation, who is also the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. James Wani Yiga, congratulated the people of Uganda on the occasion of the 49th independence anniversary. He congratulated the people of South Sudan for getting a new nation, and extended special salutations to President Museveni for his untireless efforts who, along with leaders of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), ensured that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) was reached with Khartoum.
